3 Things to Remember About Online Storytelling

1.) There’s More to Storytelling than Just Writing

I knew there were different ways to market a company to the world but in this class I learned how to tell a story through different forms of media. We did multiple videos and even did a podcast to tell a story of our main subject. Before this class I never put different sources of media to create one ultimate story. At the end of the semester we put together a writing piece, video, podcast, and photos of one chosen topic and put it together as one. I now am able to work with all sorts of media and use the sources in order to better a company in the future.

2.) Passion Helps.

For each big project we had we were able to choose what we talked about and who we would be working with. For this I was able to truly work on what I ultimately want to do as a career. I chose sports topics for both projects and I was very interested in what I was researching in and was intrigued with the information being fed to me. This being said a sense of passion helps to get your best work out because you care about what’s being put out. I now know that in order to succeed in any journalism job you have to be passionate in order to get out your best stories.

3.)It’s hard to Rely on Only One Source.

I unfortunately learned this one the hard way. I was planning on interviewing a woman for one of the assignments we had for this class. I was relying on only her and our interview to get this assignment done. At the last minute she was not able to meet with me after all and my paper was due at the end of the week. I began to stress emailed my teacher and unfortunately turned in the assignment late. However this did teach me to have a back up plan if my first one were to fall through. I think it is very important to remember going forward in my career to always have interviews set up with multiple options so that I am able to make the deadline.

The Effect of COVID-19

I took this class during a pandemic that left me taking half the semester as an online student. This has been more difficult than I had originally thought it was going to be. I have learned that online school is not for me and that I have better chances of success with an in person education. However I did learn a lot about journalism in the media during this time and how powerful it can be. I think this can be a good thing but it can also make things take a turn for the worst. I have seen a lot about the COVID-19 virus on T.V. and where it has been beneficial in a lot of ways it has also been making things harder. I say this because the media has been very good about keeping people informed about what is happening with the virus. However it has also been bad due to false information they have given the public. Some of the stats and information they are giving out to the world is not correct and there needs to be more research done before broadcasting it.

What This Summer Will Hold

This summer I plan to have an internship and I took this class in perfect time because I am now able to put everything I learned into this job. We had talked a lot about putting a brand name out there to get more publicity and that’s exactly what this organization is looking for. I plan to create a website for them and start them on a path to a more successful and known organization. Especially since everything is now online due to COVID-19 it will be good to have the option of an online source so everyone can stay up to date on everything. I’m very appreciative of this class and what it has taught me moving forward in my career.
